PALS
In September 2010, thirty-three academic leaders from 33 independent colleges of Art and Design came together to create a new vision for design education that responds to the complex nature of our world. Each PALS “Fellow” has been appointed by the president of their institution to participate in a collaborative effort to link the resources of independent art and design colleges around the critical environmental, social and human centered design issues that face us. Together we are responding the the question, “How do we ensure that our students are prepared to engage in the creation of a healthy, just and sustainable future?” This September 2012 the schools will gather at the School of the Art Insitute of Chicago to begin the implementation of their collaborative vision.
The purpose of the PALS group and summit is to work collectively to build a strategic plan for sharing and leveraging our resources to better integrate sustainability into art and design programs. Each “Fellow” has been key to defining our strategic action plan. The PALS Cohort meets monthly online and comes back together annually in September to continue to develop and implement tools for collaboration. The Pratt Center for Community Development
The Pratt Center for Community Development works for a more just, equitable, and sustainable city for all New Yorkers, by empowering communities to plan for and realize their futures.
As part of Pratt Institute, we leverage professional skills – especially planning, architecture and public policy – to support community-based organizations in their efforts to improve neighborhood quality of life, attack the causes of poverty and inequality, and advance sustainable development.
The Center was founded at the birth of the community development movement, as the first university-based advocacy planning and design center in the U.S. For over 40 years, we have helped community groups to revitalize their neighborhoods, create and preserve affordable housing, build childcare and community centers, and improve their environment. We have trained hundreds of community leaders and organizations to implement effective community development strategies, and supported a wide array of successful public policy and community planning efforts. Design Management Program
The mission of the Design Management (DM) graduate program is to build on Pratt Institute’s international reputation for developing creative leaders. DM advances Pratt’s mission through our mission to provide an educational experience that can help shape 21st century strategic leaders able to bridge the disciplines of design and business and catalyze innovation.
